BASICS FULL NAME: Mary Anna MacDonald. AGE/BIRTHDATE: Seventeen/December 3, 1959, which makes her a Sagittarius. HOUSE AND YEAR: Gryffindor, seventh. BLOODLINE: Muggleborn. WAND: 9" ash, dragon heartstring, very flexible. SEXUALITY: Heterosexual, as far as she's concerned.
APPEARANCE Mary isn't all that vain when it comes to her appearance. She thinks she's a simple looking girl who doesn't try as hard as her peers seem to, and she's okay with that. Really, she figures if she can get away with barely doing anything first thing in the morning, she'll make it work for herself.
Dark hair is where it's at, for Mary. She likes to keep her hair a dark shade of brown and rather long and wavy. More often than not, it goes just over her shoulders and sometimes she pulls it up into a loose ponytail so her fringe doesn't get in her face. Mary doesn't do much with her hair - such as product or the like - and people always tell her it looks nice. Good enough for her!
Currently, Mary stands at around 5'6" - pretty average for a girl her age. She isn't the tallest person, and definitely doesn't tower over others in her year, but she's happy enough with her height - so long as she can reach for things in the cupboard, she's set.
Honestly, Mary isn't that big. She doesn't weigh that much and she eats healthily, considering she's a teenager that sometimes enjoys a few too many sweets every now and again. Most of the things Mary wears she fits into, and that's pretty much what matters most to her - if she ever figured she was getting too big, it would be easy for her to get back on track. Hopefully.
One thing people tend to notice most about Mary is the colour of her eyes, which are a dark shade of blue that seem to pop out at a person. They're what she gets most of her compliments on, and she takes pride in them. She doesn't even need any make-up to make her features stand out apart from other people's - so maybe she's vain about her eyes, sue her.
Mary's style of dress is simple - outside of her robes for school. She likes things that are loose and don't look like she bought them two sizes too small, or like they belong to a second year. A lot of the time, Mary just picks up whatever catches her eye and buys that without trying it on. Not like she has much to lose, at the end of the day.
All in all, Mary's a simple girl. Period.
PERSONALITY First impressions of Mary MacDonald normally leads to people thinking she's shy and doesn't like to talk, when it's quite the opposite of that. Mary talks at the most inappropriate times, even when she knows she shouldn't and she says the wrong things unintentionally. Mary has a tendency to think things over before she says them, and even if she knows they shouldn't be said, she still says them regardless. She tries not to curse, but sometimes, the words slip without her realising it until it's too late.
Mary's a pretty confident person, but like everyone, she has her insecurities, though she rarely lets them show. If she's feeling down, it's rare that she'll tell anyone about it, unless she's speaking to a close friend of hers. It's not that Mary doesn't like sharing, but she hates thinking of herself as being a burden for people, or even like she's bugging them without knowing it. Most people have always been nice to Mary, even if she was being obnoxious and wouldn't stop talking -- see, she does talk, just not as much as some people tend to.
Mary always likes to think of herself as a brave person, which is probably why she was placed in Gryffindor, but people are allowed to get scared of some things. Honestly, if something scares Mary, she'll pretend it's not there or do her best to not pay attention to it. But if that's a no-go, then for the most part, Mary deals with it as it comes. One thing Mary cannot stand is looking like a coward, so she hides behind this facade of sorts, that makes her seem (and feel) much braver than she is. Hardly anybody knows about things that truly scare her, but if they do, they have to be someone that Mary really trusts, without a doubt; someone she'd trust with her life, more or less.
Not that she'll tell anyone this, but Mary's afraid of heights more than anything, and that doesn't fare well with the whole flying-thing witches and wizards have going on, now does it? This fear probably goes back to when she had to fly with her family on a plane to the States for one of her close relatives' funerals, and the whole time, she'd pictured the plane crashing or blowing up. Gabriel had made her sit near the window, too, because somehow, he knew how scared she was of heights. Throughout the whole flight, Mary had her head turned to the side, mumbling over and over again how she wasn't going to die in a plane, of all places, and that she would lead a long, healthy life once they landed. Also that she'd never fly ever again, but that didn't work out too well once she came to Hogwarts.
Another fear of Mary's is bugs of any kind. The way they crawl and are rightthere makes Mary shiver and feel as though the bugs are on her at all times. If Mary sees a bug within close proximity to herself, she either acts as though it's no big deal, screams, runs away as calmly as possible so that she doesn't seem like a coward, or even feels like she's going to pass out, if it's a big one. The sounds bugs make when people kill them -- mostly by stepping on them -- makes Mary cringe and shake her head, and if she could cover her ears every time she's around when that happens, she would. But unfortunately, Mary can't hide from bugs for the rest of her life, no matter how much she wishes she could.
In no way does Mary think she's God's Gift to the Earth, but she also knows that she's something special in her own way. She doesn't walk around like she's better than everyone around her, though sometimes she can appear cocky beyond belief, but that only occurs when she knows she's done something well. Regarding classes, for the most part, though it can also depend on what she accomplishes in general. It depends on how proud she is of something, because sometimes, she'll think she's done a job well done, but she won't praise herself for it.
Mary can be quite clingy to the people who she loves, like she is with Gabriel still to this day, regardless of how annoying he can get with being overprotective, but also with her friends. Well, the ones she does have, that is, since Gabriel always prevented her from making too many of them. A lot of her friends are females, though there's the occasional male she tries to forget to mention to Gabriel, though more often than not, he still finds out. And of course, Gabriel still tells Mary not to mess around with the witchy boys, because they're nothing but bad news.
A lot of the time, Mary seems clueless of everything that goes around her, although that's not the case at all. She's very alert of everything, but if it doesn't directly involve her, then she probably won't acknowledge it if she can avoid doing that. Mary tries her best not to stick her nose where it doesn't belong, unless she's asked to or she's told someone's problems, because then, she has no choice but to let herself listen. After all, Mary enjoys helping people in any way she can, even if it's only by being a shoulder to cry on, so to speak.
Sometimes, Mary gets this idea into her head that she can save the world, one person at a time. She listens whenever people need her to, helps with homework whenever people ask for help and she knows it, and she likes to think she's a pretty good friend to have. If one of her friends are upset, she likes to assume she's a good enough friend to run to, and she does everything in her power to cheer up whoever seems to be off for one reason or another. Occasionally, Anna tells Mary that her biggest downfall is that she cares too much, but she just tells her mother that if she doesn't, then who will? Mary doesn't think she's the only person who cares about others, not in any way, shape, or form, but if someone comes to her for something, then they obviously want her to care about it, right?
Mary can occasionally seem like she has no idea what sarcasm is, but if she's not sure of it, then she assumes someone's being sarcastic. Assumptions are never nice, but it's better, in her opinion, to just assume and hope for the best. It's not that often that Mary uses sarcasm, unless it's with friends or if it's really called for, and she likes to think that it's obvious when she uses it. She's not rude so much as honest, and some people can't handle honesty when it's given.
More often than not, Mary comes off as a complete pervert, though it's in no way intentional. It's not like she purposely glances over at people while they're snogging, or whatever they happen to be doing. It doesn't surprise Mary when she's accused of spying or perving on people, and though that's never what she's doing, she simply nods her head and moves along her merry little way. Mary also has a sense of humour, which she'll use with her friends and tell them to get on with the shagging. Well, mostly her guy friends, regardless of if they're gay or not, but she has no problems with gay people if they are.
There's many doubts in Mary's head that she'll ever do anything beyond kissing with a guy -- if she even does that, really -- because of the talk that Gabriel had given her. Mary rarely flirts with guys, just in case it gets back to Gabriel somehow, and if she ever does, it's unintentional. She doesn't want to seem like a tease in any sense of the word, but it also has to do with Mary's sense of humour and how she acts towards different people. Technicalities, though, because people are going to think what they think, regardless of what Mary says is true or not.
HISTORY Mary Anna MacDonald was born early in December, snow outside of the window and happiness all around. Her grandparents were at the hospital, along with aunts and uncles, cousins and close friends, and pretty much everyone that her parents knew. It was a day to be remembered, after all, since they weren't planning on having anymore kids after this one, and they didn't want the day to be a drag. When Mary's older brother, Gabriel, had been born, it'd had about the same atmosphere, only even more family around, because their great grandparents had still been alive at the time.
When born, Mary had been healthy and everything that her parents could ask for. They'd wanted a baby boy and a baby girl, and they'd been lucky enough to get both. They also got the order they wanted; boy first, girl second, because they wanted their daughter to have an older brother to protect her if need be. Of course, they knew that their daughter would need protection eventually, even if not at such an early age. The thought was still there, along with the worry and care, regardless of how far long the line it'd be until the protection was needed full-force.
Mary's mother, Anna, and her father, Scott, were married at a rather young age, because they thought they were ready to become a family right off the bat. They loved one another, sure, but their family had been less-than-impressed with how quickly the couple got married, and not after the wedding, while on their honeymoon, Gabriel had been conceived. Their families had almost -- almost -- taken bets on how long Anna and Scott would be together, but they were determined to prove all of them wrong, because who were they to honestly even think they had a place to judge their marriage? It wasn't concerned with them, although they'd all attended the wedding, if only to make sure that Anna actually went through with it and didn't stand Scott up at the alter. Needless to say, Anna showed up and they got married, already showing their families up, and they still love each other to this day.
After Gabriel was born, Anna and Scott had decided they wanted another child, because to them, a family was complete with two children. They didn't start trying until Gabriel had just turned eight, so that he had time to grow up before they (hopefully) had a girl, because they thought of him being the protector of the family. Well, of their daughter, because they didn't need protection from Gabriel; they were old enough to take care of themselves. It hadn't taken long for them to find out that Anna was pregnant again, and if they didn't get a daughter like they originally wanted, then they had Gabriel's hand-me-downs for a son, and they could always buy more things if they needed to. The pregnancy had gone fairly well, because now, they had the support of their families, since Anna and Scott had been together for such a long time at this point.
Mary's childhood was an easy one; she didn't have much to worry about, except for the occasional financial problem that her parents had, but beyond that, it was pretty good. Certain aspects of growing up stuck out more than others, because honestly, what could Mary do when she was one through at least ten? She could only listen to her parents, do as she was told, and learn the ways of the world. Gabriel looked out for her throughout the years, always making sure his sister was alright, always rightthere when he might've been needed.
When Mary wanted to make friends, her brother always being there was quite a problem, until she had Anna tell Gabriel to back off a bit. That happened when Mary was nine and school was getting to be a hard time without people to pass the time with. Whenever Mary thought she'd made a good friend, Gabriel would show up and tell her that this person had this wrong with them, so there was no way in hell she could be friends with them.
Mary had learned fairly early on that she could do some interesting things without really ever knowing why, such as locking doors without even getting up to do it herself. That mostly occurred when Mary didn't want to get up for school, her mother's knocking persistent on her door, so she'd will for the door to lock and somehow, it'd work, because when Anna would attempt to open it, she couldn't. Mary never thought much of it, and Anna or Scott didn't bother asking, because it could've been their daughter simply getting up to lock the door. Mary had other odd things that were caused when she'd get mad or upset, or will for something to happen, but she didn't want to think of what it could mean, or seem strange because it was unexplained, or even done on purpose.
At the age of ten, Mary thought she was in love, because of this boy, Robert. Almost every girl liked Robert, there was no doubt about it, but Mary thought that she was the one who liked him the most. She'd tried speaking to him on countless occasions, but each time she would've gone up and had her mouth open to say something, Gabriel would show up and pull her away from Robert, mumbling to her about how she shouldn't associate with boys, because they only wanted to hurt her. Mary somehow doubted that, because her father rarely ever hurt her mother, except for the odd argument, but she listened to Gabriel because she was always told to.
That occurrence caused Gabriel to sit down with Mary and have The Talk with her, which caused her to be scarred for life; she'd only been ten at the time, after all. Why in the world would she want to hear about those kinds of things so early? Gabriel told her what everything did, no matter how creepy it was for Mary, and told her the scary aspects of sex. Mary was never told the plus sides of it, but that was Gabriel's intentions: to scare his little sister from staying away from males for as long as possible. Sure, Gabriel knew Mary would eventually find out the truth, since he'd exaggerated more than a few details, but it would keep her away for long enough to grow up and worry about other parts of her life, like education and family. But afterwards, Mary was so frightened about the talk Gabriel had given her, that she locked herself in her room for two and a half weeks, to escape from boys of any kind, and she was quite letdown when she'd come out and the whole male species wasn't completely nonexistent.
After getting over not having very many friends, unless they were siblings of Gabriel's friends, Mary decided that it wasn't worth being upset over. Who needed friends, anyway? That was foolish. Mary could focus on her studies, and all of the essentials in life, without the distraction of friends. Besides, the friends that Gabriel sort of forced upon her were good; they were there for Mary when she needed them, without a problem, and her older brother approved of them. Maybe things weren't as bad as Mary had a tendency to make them out to be. Just maybe.
Mary received a letter informing her that she was accepted to Hogwarts, from one of the professors who taught there. It was a huge shock to Mary, but she decided against thinking into it too much and instead showed her mother. After Anna had read what the letter had to say, she'd called Scott to her right away to let him look over it, and they'd always believed almost anything they were told. Some people called them gullible, others thought they were open to everything. Of course, Gabriel was rightthere with them, and he was the one who didn't believe what it said, so he tore it up. Granted, that little temper tantrum got him in trouble, but he didn't care; there was no way that his little sister was a witch. Wizard. Whatever. Mary didn't care either way. If she was a wizard? Cool, great. If not? Well, it'd really suck if she thought she had magic, but only to find out that she didn't, though it wouldn't be the end of the world.
To Mary's somewhat shock (and relief) and Gabriel's dismay, it was true.
On her first day of school, Mary was told by Gabriel that she couldn't let those witchy boys try to tell her differently to what he did about sex and all about males. Mary had nodded with her eyes wide, because she remembered exactly what was said, how it was said, even if she didn't want to in the slightest. Gabriel had also told Mary that he had his eye on her, regardless of how far away she was, and that he expected updates all the time. Okay, so maybe Gabriel took his Older Brother Role far too seriously, but if he didn't do it, who would? Scott was more of a go-with-the-flow type of person, and Anna was more of the type to just... be. If things happened, they did, she dealt with them as they came.
Now, Mary's seventeen and has been going to Hogwarts for six years, and Gabriel still makes sure that his younger sister isn't doing anything she knows she shouldn't be doing. Somehow, Gabriel knows everything that goes on regarding Mary, even if she doesn't tell him certain details. That makes Mary think that Gabriel's somehow there, although that's far from possible, but sometimes, she still looks over her shoulder to make sure that her brother isn't there. It's not that she's afraid of him, because she's not -- she's barely afraid of anything, and had always been that way -- but Gabriel's the type of person to sneak up on others to give them that Element of Surprise.
LOCKEWOOD RESIDENCE: 29 Quills St. OCCUPATION: Store clerk for Bookends WHAT YEAR IN TIME WAS YOUR CHARACTER TRANSPORTED FROM? 1977. WHAT IS YOUR CHARACTER'S DEEPEST DARKEST SECRET? The beginning of Mary's fifth year, she was hexed by Mulciber after they were kept after class by Professor Sprout for an argument that occurred during class. After this happened, Mary figures out if she were faced with fighting against the Death Eaters or not, she wouldn't even try - there would be no point in being tortured like she had been before, thus meaning she would be on the bad guys' side - which, overall, is something Mary would never want for herself.
